Under the direction of department leadership, the Organ Donation Specialist is responsible for the screening, evaluation, and clinical management of the potential organ donor. The Organ Donation Specialists demonstrates sensitivity and empathy when offering donation to a potential donor family, providing support and compassion during and after the donation process. Fosters a collaborative/team working spirit and actively helps and supports others to achieve team goals. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES --- Meets with the potential donor family to offer donation providing emotional support during and after the donation process. --- Accurately obtains and completes written consent from the legal next of kin for the purposes of organ donation --- Coordinates the organ donation process including screening for medical suitability, clinical assessment, and medical management of donor candidate. --- Coordinates with surgical recovery teams. --- Is responsible for organ allocation in accordance with prevailing organ distribution policies through UNOS. --- Arranges for histocompatibility and serologic testing of the donor. --- Identifies donor/recipient matches through collaboration with other organ procurement organizations, transplant teams and the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database. --- Communicates accurate and pertinent information about the donor to the transplant and/or procurement surgeons. --- Works with anesthesia and nursing staff to coordinate pre- and post-donation processes and operating room tasks. --- Collects and documents medical data and donor medical and social history as related to the procurement process. --- Assists Hospital Relations Specialists with educating health care professionals and the public regarding organ donation; may develop, conduct, and participate in education programs for health care professionals and the public. --- Participates in OPO and transplant department related research studies. --- Contributes to quality assurance activities. --- Supports and demonstrates a customer service commitment to internal and external customers through adherence to Versiti customer service standards and processes. --- Maintains competence through attendance job-related continuing education. --- Actively participates and contributes in Lean and continuous improvement. --- Understands and performs to all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements set forth by AOPO (Association of Organ Procurement Organizations) and UNOS. --- Demonstrates Core Values: Do Right Always, Find a Better Way, Make Results Happen and Strengthen the Team. --- Demonstrates schedule flexibility as determined by business need --- Work/job related travel and reliable transportation is required. --- Requires evening, weekend and holiday work hours. --- Proactively seeks continued professional development. QUALIFICATIONS Education --- RN (Registered Nurse), NP (Nurse Practitioner), or PA (Physician's Assistant) or a Critical Care Paramedic --- Graduate of an organ procurement school with Human Donation Science Certification Experience --- Two years critical care experience required Skills and Knowledge --- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks --- Flexibility to work independently and with a team. --- Strong attention to detail. --- Strong communication skills, including the ability to provide feedback to peers. --- Strong conflict resolution skills, able to communicate and collaborate with others during challenging and stressful situations --- Effective problem solving and decision making skills in high stress environment --- Ability to listen actively and respond with empathy and sensitivity --- Valid Wisconsin Driver's License and access to a vehicle Tools and Technology --- Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). --- General office equipment (computer, printer, fax, copy machine, scanner) --- Familiarity with ICU equipment (IV pumps, Ventilator, GE monitor) PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS --- Physical demands: Daily tasks include a mixture of standing, sitting, and walking. Hand-eye coordination with significant manual dexterity. Reaching above the head and lifting up to 40-pound items occurs occasionally. Visual and hearing acuity to perform essential responsibilities. Looking at computer screens or small items is common. --- Mental demands: Requires ability to maintain a routine of intense concentration for long periods, as well as excellent cognitive, analytical, and memory ability. Ability to multitask in high stress environments. --- Environmental hazards: Frequent work with biohazardous material is completed in the ICU/Operating Room environment wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and following internal policies, training, and OSHA standards. Moderate level of noise is present in the ICU environment.
