Waterfront Coordinator-Camp Whitcomb

Job Description:

Position Summary:

Responsible for support and supervision to lifeguard team, camper behavior management, and all camp programming activities. Maintain inventory of program supplies and equipment. Work closely with Camp Manager/Coordinator, Camp Director, and occasionally with Executive Director. Part of the Camp Whitcomb/Mason Pathways team.

Responsibilities:

* Provide support and leadership to develop and deliver resident and day camp programming that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers and utilize the camp's resources. * Write lesson plans that meet camp outcomes and the abilities of the campers to develop them into leaders. Implement a variety of age and ability appropriate activities. * Work with campers that need behavior management plans and communicate camper challenges with appropriate counseling staff and full-time staff. * Ensure camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures. * Assist in the implementation of staff training. * Complete bi-weekly observation forms with lifeguards. * Provide day-to-day guidance, support and supervision to lifeguards. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in main camp. * Responsible for observing hazards or enhancements in the natural environment in main camp and alerting other appropriate staff. * Ensure that the program equipment and supplies are inventoried, and steps are taken to replace then in a timely manner. * Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair. * Responsible for programming and assisting in the facilitation of age appropriate pool and waterfront activities. * Must participate in required trainings by the Club, County, State, and/or funder. * Work cooperatively with all staff to ensure quality programming. * Understand and follow transportation policies and procedures while riding transportation to and from Camp Whitcomb/Mason with members and other staff. * Display excellent customer service to all people while on duty. * Respond to emergencies as designated by the Camp Whitcomb/Mason Emergency Action Plan. * Understands and follows the BGCGM Member Care Manual and Camp Handbook policies and procedures. * Provide appropriate guidance and direction through supportive relationships with members. * Responsible for development, implementation and documentation of lifeguard site orientation, skills review, emergency drills and weekly in-service training. * Ability to perform all lifeguard responsibilities and ensure all lifeguard duties are being completed appropriately and on time.

Experience and Skills

Requirements:

* High School Diploma required. Some college or BS degree in an environmental or education field preferred. * 2-3 years of experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds. * Experience lifeguarding at a pool or lake preferred. * ARC Waterfront Lifeguard Certification within 2 weeks of employment start.

Skills:

* Valid Wisconsin Driver's License with good driving record and state required automobile insurance minimums preferred. * Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills. * Supervisory experience preferred. * Ability to pass the lifeguard certification physical requirements and maintain those skills throughout the summer. * Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks.

Some physical requirements of this position could be endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs; willing to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities; and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc. Ability to communicate and work with groups participating and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency.
