We Are Hiring:

The Chief Nursing Officer, Ascension Wisconsin provides vision and strategic direction for nursing operation and collaborates with regional and facility nursing leadership to achieve this direction. 

What You Will Do:

The position proactively works to improve and ensure the overall quality of the patient experience and associate experience by continuous process improvement objectives and measures. The position advocates for nursing practice and the patient experience, helps to develop systems in alignment with the NCOE Caregiver Model that are patient and family-centered, and promotes the linkage of key services and functions across the hospitals within the Wisconsin market. 



  • Will, as an active member of the Nursing Ministry Wide Function, participate & contribute to the National CNO Operations Council with respect to cascading the Nursing Center of Excellence (NCOE) work via the 3-year Nursing Dynamic Plan to the market level.
  • Collaborates with local nursing leadership, hospital leadership and medical staff to identify and develop new patient care programs, policies, procedures, and practice standards for the nursing departments.
  • Develops and implements a standardized program to measure, assess and improve the quality of nursing care provided by the organization
  • Evaluates the function and structure of assigned areas to best determine the allocation and utilization of services and budgets appropriately according to strategic goals.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations related to nursing services and healthcare.
  • Assures continuity and consistency of nursing care standards and practice across the market.
  • Develops and implements Ascension nursing policies, objectives, and initiatives.
  • Provides leadership for nursing workforce development and develops results oriented programs that promote the retention, recruitment, continuing education and development of clinical nurses and support services staff.
  • Provides leadership in developing and implementing strategies to improve operational excellence and service delivery and to continuously improve results in patient and resident satisfaction and clinical, service, safety and financial outcomes system-wide.
  • Collaborates with the Ascension Wisconsin Chief Clinical Officer and medical staff to address changes affecting delivery of clinical services.  Promotes work redesign in order to proactively respond to the changing health care environment.
  • Develops and maintains nursing and clinical infrastructure to enhance decision making and decrease variance in care, quality and safety across the continuum of care, including AMG. 
  • Using a high level of financial acumen, oversees productivity, operations, budget, and financial targets. 
  • Ensures that all patients receive the highest quality care.
  • Keeps current on innovative concepts, practices, and procedures in nursing. 
  • Provides consultation on complex projects and is the top-level nursing contributor/ specialist.
What You Will Need:



Licensure / Certification / Registration:

  • Registered Nurse credentialed from the Wisconsin Board of Nursing obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date required. Licensure from the Wisconsin Board of Nursing OR current home state license if considered multi-state/Compact State.
  • Holds a national nurse certification or obtains within the first year of employment.


  • Master's degree required.

Work Experience:

  • 5 years of experience required.
  • 10 years of experience is preferred.
  • 2 years of leadership or management experience required.
  • 5 years of leadership or management experience preferred.
Additional Preferences:
  • Leads the acute nursing care operational improvement activities driving quality, safety and workforce metrics.
  • Demonstrated experience in raising and maintaining high levels of patient satisfaction scores.
  • Operationalizes and integrates new care delivery models to make practical business decisions based on data.
  • Ability to implement standard practices to drive responsibility & accountability for nursing and clinical operation outcomes.
  • Strong business acumen with ability to drive change in a large, complex organization with matrix reporting relationships. 
  • Demonstrated success in leading large scale initiatives that have significant impact across the organization.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, and work cross-functionally in a matrix organization and with sponsor partner(s) to ensure that all business needs are met.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills to build successful relationships with key leaders and internal colleagues. Proven ability to partner with other executives across the system.
  • Proven change leadership skills, with the passion to engage, energize, and motivate large disparate groups of people to introduce, implement, and sustain the high-impact actions necessary for aggressive operational and financial performance improvement.
  • Excellent team leadership skills, with ability to create a sense of shared ownership and urgency within the organization, building and enhancing the development of an accountable, results-driven culture.
